Safety Tips for a Fun and Safe Halloween Night in Tarrant County
Halloween is an exciting time for children, filled with costumes, treats, and community festivities! As parents and caregivers, it’s our role to help our children enjoy the fun while staying safe. If you’re in Tarrant County (or the surrounding area), here are safety tips and local resources to support you.
🗺️Plan Your Route & Set Expectations: Before heading out, map your route together. Choose well-lit neighborhoods with sidewalks and homes that are participating in trick-or-treating. Talk with your children ahead of time about where you’ll go, with whom, and a time to return. For older kids going out with friends, make sure they know the boundaries, carry a cell phone, and check in periodically.
🧚♀️Check Costumes for Safety: Dark costumes may look spooky, but they can make it hard for drivers to see trick-or treaters at night. Add reflective tape, glow sticks, or flashlights to costumes and bags so your little goblins and superheroes stand out. Choose footwear that is comfortable and safe for walking.
🚸Stay Street Smart: Cross streets at corners and sidewalks. Always look both ways before crossing. Remind children to walk and stay on sidewalks whenever possible. If driving, go slow and stay alert!
🍬Keep Candy Checks a Tradition: Before your child dives into their candy haul, take a few minutes to check all treats. Discard anything that’s open, unwrapped, or looks suspicious. For children with allergies, double check ingredients labels before they eat.
🎃Make it Fun and Memorable: Encourage your child to use their imagination, express their creativity, and enjoy the night. Take a moment to reinforce kindness: saying “thank you,” greeting neighbors, acknowledging younger trick-or-treaters— this builds community and positive memories.
