Meet ELA’s Acting Executive Director, Kym Shaw Day

We are thrilled to introduce Kym Shaw Day, the Acting Executive Director of the Early Learning Alliance (ELA). With a rich background in early childhood education spanning over three decades, Kym brings a wealth of experience and a deep passion for advocating for young children and their families. Her journey in education began as a classroom teacher, and she has since held various roles that have allowed her to influence policy, support educators, and drive systemic change.

BACKGROUND STORY
Kym’s story starts in the housing projects of South Dallas, Texas. Raised by her strong and caring grandmother, Kym found deep inspiration in her granny’s acts of kindness. Her grandmother, the neighborhood’s cornerstone, was always ready to help– whether it was sewing clothes for local children or cooking meals for the families in need. Surrounded by such compassion and generosity, Kym grew up with a profound desire to make a significant difference in the lives of young children.

Kym’s professional journey began as an infant classroom teacher, eventually moving to teaching two-year-olds (her favorite age). Through dedication and hard work, she climbed the ranks to become an assistant director and eventually director of a child care center. Along the way, she was mentored by Patrick Broshonhan, who significantly influenced her career in early childhood. Her academic achievements are notable as well. Kym proudly holds an Early Childhood Associates Degree, Bachelor’s in Business, and Master’s in Education..

Her leadership experience spans over 20 years, including serving as a principal at a private school in Atlanta, Georgia. Her extensive background in early childhood led her back to North Texas, where she secured a position at Educational First Steps as they launched their programs in Fort Worth. Thanks to her advocacy efforts, Kym became one of the founding members of ELA.

Outside of her professional life, Kym is a proud mother of one son and grandson, her favorite color is yellow, and she loves Prince and his music.

VISION FOR THE EARLY LEARNING ALLIANCE
As Acting Executive Director, Kym’s vision for ELA is deeply rooted in her commitment to community services and her dedication to improving early childhood educational systems for children and their families. She aims to elevate ELA to the next level, focusing on how the Alliance can best serve the community. Kym is determined to continue the work of transforming systems that currently pose challenges for families. Her goal is to help make these systems navigable through community collaborations, ensuring the best possible educational outcomes for young children.

TOP PRIORITIES FOR THE COMING YEAR

My goal is to position ELA as the go-to-resource for early childhood organizations, business, and stakeholders. By enhancing the Alliance’s role in the community, ELA can be the central hub for all early childhood education needs in Tarrant County.
— Kym Shaw Day

Kym is dedicated to supporting legislative initiatives in early childhood education during next year’s session. By advocating for policies that benefit young learners and their families, she aims to create a more equitable and accessible education system for all.

We are excited to see the positive changes and advancements that Kym Shaw Day will bring to the Early Learning Alliance. Her leadership and commitment to early childhood are sure to make a lasting impact on our community.
