Member Spotlight: BCDI-DFW

This month, we are spotlighting the Dallas-Fort Worth Metro affiliate of the National Black Child Development Institute (BCDI-DFW).

Dr. Nedra Washington Goss, BCDI-DFW President, shared about the organization’s work and partnership with ELA.

Tell me a little about BCDI-DFW. How did it begin? What is its mission? How did you get involved?

Back in 2011, I completed my Ph.D. and my mentor recommended the conference to present my findings (How Are African American Parents Involved in Their Children's Education, Prekindergarten to Sixth Grade). So I submitted, and it was accepted. I arrived in D.C., and I was so in awe of all of these black professionals and the impact they were making in these major cities, I wanted Dallas to be a part of the change. Additionally, I happened to meet another lady from Dallas County (Cedar Hill) named Tobitha Holmes (owner of W.I.SE. Academy). We first bonded together because we are Sorors (Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc), and then I asked Tobitha if she would assist in starting our own affiliate and she said yes. The rest is history. We have been connected since, and we became official and chartered in 2014 after two years of being an interest group. Our mission is to improve the quality of life of Black children and their families through education and advocacy.

How did BCDI-DFW become involved with ELA?

I have always believed partnerships are important. We all want the best for our children and their families; however, the path we choose is somewhat different but yet connected. The focus of ELA is policy driven and we (BCDI DFW METRO) advocate for policy changes, updates, or new policy for our communities. This is the area of expertise for ELA and communities can accomplish more when we are diversified in our missions and goals within our community.

Why is it beneficial to BCDI-DFW to partner with ELA?

The same reason it is beneficial for ELA to partner with BCDI DFW METRO. We need one another. No one entity can do the work alone, and there is so much work needed in so many areas for our children and families’ lives. We can collaborate, share information, and exchange information that will help with the challenges in our communities and provide more solutions within our communities.

If someone wants to learn more about BCDI-DFW or get involved, what should they do?

They can always visit our website or social media pages (Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter). They can also email us at bciddfwmetro@gmail.com.

What’s coming up for BCDI-DFW?

Our focus will remain early learning community and home based centers, but specifically this year we would like to focus on parental/family engagement. All that we do for 2024 will involve both parents and children together. We are in the midst of redesigning our website which should be up and running the first of the year. We will also have a community awards breakfast ceremony Jan. 13 — save the date! We are excited about the new year, for our children and their families, with our partners, and with our communities.
